Perak to have Opposition leader post

State opposition: Perak to go ahead with plan

ImageIPOH, June 17(ES)- Perak will go ahead with its plan to amend its constitution to allow the establishment of the post of opposition leader for the state.

Perak Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaludin said the move was to make the post official in a state which has “the largest number of opposition assemblymen”.

In a press conference held at his office here today, Nizar expressed optimism that other Pakatan Rakyat led state would follow suit with the move.

Pakatan Rakyat coalition comprised of Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and People Justice Party (KeADILan) won five states including Perak in the March 8 general election and 82 out of 222 parliamentary seats on the platform of reforms and democratic changes.

“Perak will become the first state to recognise the opposition leader position,”he said adding that the move was in line with the practice at other Commonwealth countries.

The state assembly will convene starting June 24.The Pakatan state is poised to celebrate its 100 days in office July 7.
